Women's Leadership Council

What is the Women's Leadership Council?

Women’s Leadership Council is a unique committee within Butler County United Way dedicated to “Investing in our Children”.   As women, mothers and business leaders working and living in Butler County we see an added need to secure the future of our youth.  We support, advocate and volunteer to improve their lives.

What We Want

Our focus has changed as the needs of our communities have changed.  Today we help support the Backpack Program.   Our dollars feed children over the weekend that would otherwise go hungry.  As federal programs are being elevated on a national level, the Women’s Leadership Council needs to be prepared to alter not only how we raise money but who we are going to support.  Yes, we need your financial support, but we want more.  We want your voice to be heard and the opportunity to spend time with our youth.  Giving back to our community comes in various ways and all are important.

How We Work

The Women’s Leadership Council – Investing in Children has restructured.  Contributing at the national Leadership level of $1,000.00 a year gives you the privilege to vote on which Butler County youth agency you feel needs our support.  To some, this a small price to pay to be involved, while to others this is not feasible.  The board of the Women’s Leadership Council does not want to discriminate and exclude women who want to be a part of something bigger.  Therefore, up to four people can collaborate to make one vote.  Next year in 2012, our district meeting will be held so all the women can hear up to four selected agencies explain why the additional funding from the “Women’s Leadership Council” will make their agency more successful in serving our youth.  Your vote will determine who receives this lump sum of money.  100% of our dollars will go to the designated agency we collectively feel will benefit.  Can you think of a better way to support our youth?  And yes, every community, every school, every district in Butler County has children at risk.

One of the goals of the Women's Leadership Council is to focus collective resources to increase awareness and impact on community unmet needs. That is why the Women's Leadership Council is pleased to announce its Feed the Mind campaign.

One out of every 5 children in Ohio face the threat of hunger each month.

The cost to feed 1 child 6 meals each weekend for 31 weeks of school = $100 or $3.15/weekend.

14 Head Start programs and 58 Butler County elementary schools have 2,120 students served each week by the BackPack Program.

There are more than 100 children on the waiting list.

In the past, the Women's Leadership Council has promoted the BackPack Program, a collaborative effort between Shared Harvest Foodbank and Butler County School Success, as an avenue towards eliminating learning barriers for children in poverty. While this is true and the Women's Leadership Council is supporting the BackPack Program through the Feed the Mind campaign, the group wanted to not only support a program, but raise awareness of the problem it addresses.

Children simply cannot focus and learn if they are hungry, and one out of five children in Ohio experience that every month.  The Backpack Program makes sure children have adequate meals outside of the school environment. Bags of food are placed into the children's backpacks every Friday for the upcoming weekend.  The cost is miniscule ($3.15 per weekend), but the impact is huge.

Other Feed the Mind Programs include:

  • Girls, Inc.
  • Taking Charge
  • Project Success
  • Family Mediation
  • Sexual Abuse Treatment for Children
  • Leadership Development
  • Adult/child Mentoring
  • Legal Advocacy
  • Volunteer and Enrichment Programs
