One of the goals of the Women's Leadership Council is to focus collective resources to increase awareness and impact on community unmet needs. That is why the Women's Leadership Council is pleased to announce its Feed the Mind campaign.
- One out of every 5 children in Ohio face the threat of hunger each month.
- The cost to feed 1 child 6 meals each weekend for 31 weeks of school = $100 or $3.15/weekend.
- 14 Head Start programs and 58 Butler County elementary schools have 2,120 students served each week by the BackPack Program.
- There are more than 100 children on the waiting list.
In the past, the Women's Leadership Council has promoted the BackPack Program, a collaborative effort between Shared Harvest Foodbank and Butler County School Success, as an avenue towards eliminating learning barriers for children in poverty. While this is true and the Women's Leadership Council is supporting the BackPack Program through the Feed the Mind campaign, the group wanted to not only support a program, but raise awareness of the problem it addresses.
Children simply cannot focus and learn if they are hungry, and one out of five children in Ohio experience that every month. The Backpack Program makes sure children have adequate meals outside of the school environment. Bags of food are placed into the children's backpacks every Friday for the upcoming weekend. The cost is miniscule ($3.15 per weekend), but the impact is huge.
